God is so good. Where else could you live next to a dinosaur on a pole, curvy, wavy
slides, colored bars to walk on, swing on, pull-up on, and multi-shaped
"things", as well as get set free from an old perspective? I had thought of our apartment complex as
just a great little treasure nestled among ivy covered trees, orange and yellow
Tiger Lily at their base, and having the only two blocks of tree-lined section
on an eight block road.
Unlike some of the other centers in our city, this one has
green grass that is well taken care of, a large parking lot and fenced yard for
kids to play in. All day sweet little
cherub-like faces go in and out of the daycare center. What a wonderland for
imaginations to be ignited.
One day as I was passing the center on my daily walk, six
silver seniors were walking into the building. "Hi, are you joining us today?" Each of their expectant faces
turned towards me waiting for an answer.
"Joining you for what?" a wee bit surprised as I
responded.
"Oh, we come three or four days a week for lunch. Come on. You'll like it here." They giggled and laughed like the girls in
high school, playfully pushing on each other, and getting a bit of gingersnap
in their walk. I was beginning to
wonder what they served in that place. First the children were happy and excited to enter the doors, and now
silver seniors!
Hesitantly I yelled back, "Another time". My walk proceeded, but I noticed I wasn't
moving as fast as I had been. What had
kept me from joining them? I made the
excuse, not wearing the right clothes. But I
knew it was an excuse.
An hour later, rounding the corner near the neighborhood
pizzeria, I stopped in for a can of Pepsi and a salad. Seated by myself reading the newspaper,
another silver senior called a greeting to me. Giving him a kindly greeting, he stood and walked towards me, with two
women following. All three were limping
and having so much difficulty walking, sitting was not much easier for them.
Seated next to me, they asked, "Are you by your self,
married, or widowed?" In
shock, my mouth parted slightly
wondering who these people were. Then
one of the women helped me out a bit with, "At our age, you're going to be
one of the three. We just like to know
which one."
After chatting with them for a few minutes, I left having
made three new friends and a new perspective. "You have to be one of the three." Wow, what a thought. .
